Here is a photo of the dress we are working on in this lesson
Unfold the cut-out
bodice and lay flat. Clean finish the
sleeves by turning under 1/4 inch and press. Stitch on
trim or lace to finish the edge.
Now we will finish
the neck edge by sewing a facing onto it. To make the facing, just cut
out another bodice (use a lining material or the same fabric as the dress,
I used a nice batiste for the facing here). Lay the facing on the bodice
as shown, right sides together. Stitch as shown in the above picture the
dotted lines indicate the stitching line. I cut off the sleeve portion
of the facing to eliminate bulk in the sleeves and zig zag stitched the
edge for a clean finish.
Trim and clip
the neck edge as shown. Turn the facing to the inside and press.
Your facing should look like this after clipping and pressing.
Here is a look
at the right side of the bodice so far. With the sleeve edges and neckline
finished we are ready to sew the side seams.
Stitch side
seams as shown. Clip curves and press seam open. Now we will make the skirt
portion of the dress.
To make the
full skirt fold up hem to desired length. I use stitch witchery to fuse
the hem. This is also a good time to sew on any trim to the hem on the outside
of the skirt. Before you start gathering, fold the skirt in half and make
a little crease so you know where the center front is.
To gather skirt,
stitch 2 rows of basting stitches and gently pull the bobbin threads to
form gathers. Start on one side and pull the gathers to the center front,
then pull from the other side to the center front.
Pin the skirt to the bodice
right sides together. Match the center front of the skirt to the center
front of the bodice and place your first pin there then continue pinning
to each side. Stitch the skirt to the bodice with the gathered skirt on
top of the bodice. Trim the seam and press .
Stitch the center back seam a little more than half way
up from the hem.
Slipstitch the facing down
as shown. Sew in snaps and you are done.
I added some pink buttons and a sash to complete Ann's
dress.
